Application process for IoTUK Boost Entrepreneurship Support

The diagram below shows the anticipated application route in solid orange, with dashed lines showing the options.

Process Launch

The programme was officially launched on 13 December 2016 by IoTUK, see the official launch here.

We made parallel announcements locally and with our enterprise networks. This marked the official start of the application process.

Acceptance into the Bristol SETsquared IoTUK Boost Entrepreneurship programme is based on three evaluations of your idea:

  1. SETsquared written application
  2. 5 min pitch at the IoTUK Boost Pitch Day – 3 March 2017
  3. 1 hour interview with Bristol SETsquared IoTUK Boost review panel

Stage One

We strongly recommend you apply online via Bristol SETsquared as soon as you have a good plan for your IoT innovation.

The application page is:

Please select “Bristol” as the SETsquared centre, and note in the “How did you hear about us?” section: IoTUK Boost

You can do this at any time between now and 3 March 2017, but sooner is better.

You do not need to have a fully worked up business plan, but put in as much information as you can.

The key entry criteria are:

  • early stage IoT product or service;
  • ready for commercial prototype stage, or early market release;
  • high commercial growth potential;

The Bristol SETsquared team will also look for proposals where they can add genuine value in accelerating your business.

If you submit your application in good time before 3 March 2017, the review team may contact you to arrange a pre-pitch interview. This will be 1 hour at Engine Shed, Bristol and replaces your Stage Three interview. Note: you still need to pitch on 3 March to be considered for the programme.

If you have an idea but aren’t ready to write it down, you can still participate but you will need to complete a Bristol SETsquared application form before Stage Three.

Stage Two

Attendance at the Bristol SETsquared IoTUK Boost Pitch Day, 3 March 2017. You can also optionally attend the IoTUK track at Voxxed Days Bristol, 2 March. Both days are in the Watershed, Bristol.

This day will be a mix of information to help you refine your business plan, and afternoon pitching sessions to the review panel.

Note: The pitching should be considered public disclosure, therefore, do not reveal any confidential information. There are sections in the application form for confidential material, and the Stage Three interview is confidential so you will have opportunity to make your case in confidence.

This technical track will focus on IoT in a cloud computing context. A special free ticket is being made available for technical teams that are not interested in the rest of Voxxed Days Bristol (cloud architecture, big data & analytics, Java & JVM languages), of course, we hope you’ll find interest in the whole of Voxxed Days Bristol.

Note: Voxxed Days Bristol is a paid event for industry, the full event page is here:

Stage Three

Short listed companies from the Bristol SETsquared applications and the 3 March Pitch Day, will be invited to interview between Monday 6 March and Thursday 16 March 2017.

All interviews will take place in Engine Shed, Bristol, and last for one hour.

The interview will allow the SETsquared IoTUK review panel to explore your business idea in more detail and better understand how the programme may benefit you. These interviews are confidential so you will be able to share your ideas and plans freely.

As each business is unique, there is no ‘cookie-cutter’ offer from SETsquared; the interview is a critical part of assessing how we will work together over the next 12 months, and hopefully beyond.

Stage Four

Announcements of the successful 10 SME’s will be made on 17 March 2017.
